  1. The meeting began at 6:45 PM with a welcoming statement from Capt Paul Walker.  A special welcome was given to two guests at the meeting.  Ms. Barbara Givens, a local resident, and Jonathan McFarland, who is on temporary assignment to this sector from upstate New York.

  2. A discussion of the IFT conference that will be held in Las Vegas, 10.21.06 and 10.22.06 was next.  Capt. Walker asked for a show of hands of those crew members that would be attending the conference.  It appeared from that show of hands that most if not all the crew have set aside time to join the conference for at least one of the two days it will be held.  Potential attendees were asked to pre-register if possible.  Meeting arrangements for approximately 75 attendees are being made at the Tuscany Casino & Hotel for this conference.   Please check the web site for regular updates on this conference.

  3. XO Cornwell provided an update on the USS Excalibur project.  The project continues to move ahead despite a temporary setback in production schedules.  This is a non profit organization and all were encouraged to support it in any way possible.  Sets and scenes are under production and any assistance such as your labor is appreciated.  The work is not physically difficult and help is needed.

  4. The 40th anniversary of Star Trek National Convention will be held in Las Vegas beginning on 08.17.06.  The idea of providing a table in the convention was discussed.  The cost is minimal and it was suggested that the USS Battleborn, also assigned to this sector might share in this expense.  It would give local members some national exposure and also could be a very strong recruiting tool.  Time was allotted at the next staff meeting for additional discussion on this item.

  5. The IFT is offering classes for senior officers, to help develop their skills and abilities in performing their duties.  The classes are available online and for a minimal cost to those seeking the opportunity to advance in the IFT.  There are also specific other classes for developing skills needed to advance.  Please check online or XO Cornwell about any class or course that interests you.

  6. At the staff meeting in May, Chief Morale Officer Andrews suggested that a social event for staff members and their family might prove to be beneficial.  Named “Today is a good day to dine,” the idea met with favor among the staff.  It was decided that the evening of 6.07.06 would be available for all those that wanted to attend.  The time is 7:00 PM.  The place will be Komol Thai Restaurant.  Komol is located in the Commercial Center on East Sahara.  Going east on Sahara turn right at the light at Sahara and Commercial Center Drive, take the first right, and then and immediate left and the restaurant will be on your left about half way across the parking lot.   It was noted that this would be a social event and no actual IFT business would be conducted at this time.

  7. A discussion of community involvement programs was next and it was decided that we would take a ˝ mile section of highway to be determined by the state and participate in the Adopt-a-highway program.  Basically this involves walking both sides of the highway and picking up trash.  The state provides the bags for what is picked up, they pick the bags up when we are done, and they provide a sign on both sides of the highway stating who I responsible for that portion of road.  This service is provided 4 times a year.  It was agreed that this was a good idea and XO Cornwell is working out the details.

  8. Capt. Walker provided an overview of new events for Star Trek.  A new movie has been announced for 2008 this will be the 11th in the series.  “The Continuum “ a collection of TV shows from all the series that featured “Q” is scheduled for release on 6.06.07.  A new game, “Star Trek, the Legacy” is set for a possible release in September 2006.  New ST stationary, postcards, and a journal will also be available in early June.

  9. Capt. Walker updated the staff on the MDA telethon for Labor Day weekend.  It will be hosted here in Las Vegas for the first time in approximately 10 years.  The South Coast Hotel & Casino is set to host this event.  Those interested may volunteer to host the phones and accept pledges during the telethon.  Please contact Capt. Walker for additional information if you are interested.

  10. IFT tee shirts are available for $11, they are black with IFT logo o the upper left hand side.

  11. The last item on the agenda was another community project introduced by one of our guests.  Barbara suggested that we might consider working with teachers, specifically science teaches in helping the to find materials for study.  Several possible sources for material were mentioned.  Including NASA, The Lowell Observatory, SETI at UC Berkley and several others.  Barbara was to investigate this project farther and report at the next meeting.

The next scheduled meeting is on June 21, 2006 @ 6:30 PM at Quark’s.

 Meeting adjourned.
